Ethan Laird reveals winning desire to succeed at Manchester United

Ethan Laird is one of many exciting prospects to emerge from Manchester United’s academy set-up, featuring thirteen times in a U23 side that has largely impressed for the majority of this season.

Of these thirteen appearances, Laird has been on the winning side eleven times, registering three assists. The right-back has been one of the standout performers for Neil Wood’s team, gaining recognition for his ability to burst down the channel and get the ball inside the box.

His progression is certainly not going unnoticed at the club either. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer selected Laird for the senior squad’s trip to Astana, where the 18-year-old started and played the whole game. He was also used as a substitute during the 4-0 win at home to AZ, and these cameos are designed to help integrate Laird into the first-team picture, in a pragmatic manner.

The Englishman has reflected on his senior debut with Three Point Start, stating: “It was just a great experience in itself. I was like ‘right, I’m just happy to be here and if I play then wow.’ Then you hear that you are playing and you start feeling the nerves, I start feeling excited because I can now show what I am about to everyone who is watching.”

Although the game ended in defeat for United, it was certainly a valuable learning experience for many of the youngsters on the night. Promoting such academy talents has been an integral part of Solskjaer’s philosophy this season, and Laird looks destined to receive more opportunities.

Further speaking on the podcast, it’s clear that the defender possesses the right mindset to succeed at the club: “I wanted to let Ole know that I’m ready for this, that I can hack this level of football. So yeah, it was exciting finding out. Making my debut in itself I just remember walking around the pitch. When I get on the pitch I don’t get any nerves because I know like I am focused and locked in.”

The manager himself has recently revealed that he is looking to promote Laird into the senior squad, similar to how he has done with the likes of Teden Mengi and James Garner. At just 18-years-of-age, the right-back’s career has already taken the necessary steps, to put him on the path for greatness at the club.
