David de Gea has revealed that he currently feels the best he ever has done in his playing career.
This season marks the Spaniard’s tenth campaign with Manchester United, and yet, the goalkeeper is only just turning 30. De Gea will hit this mark in just over a couple of weeks, but it’s quite astonishing to think he is only just reaching this age – for a goalkeeper, he is still rather young.
Speaking to the official United website, the 29-year-old addressed whether people actually overlook his age: “Yeah maybe because I’ve been playing a lot since I was very young but right now I feel probably the best I’ve felt in my career.
“I feel very, very well and very confident and very positive and that’s very important for me. Now it’s time to be back to winning ways and winning trophies, that’s the most important thing for us at the moment. Like I say I feel very, very good.”
During his tenth anniversary with the club though, De Gea finds himself with a new threat to his number one spot. Dean Henderson is remaining at United this season to challenge in-between the sticks, creating a unique scenario for everybody at the Carrington complex.
Speaking about such competition, Dave continued to say: “It’s very important to have good feelings with the other goalkeepers and the goalkeeping coaches as well. It’s great. We are training, like I say, very, very well – the whole department of keepers. We need to be at this level every day and to show the players that the keepers are feeling 100%. Now like I said we have to go for trophies.”
Many fans have predicted for the presence of Henderson to actually elevate De Gea’s performances, something that will only benefit the club in the long run. Despite a lack of transfer investment, United will be focused in trying to elevate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s project.
De Gea will no doubt continue to play some part in the hunt for success and for himself, this is all that matters. He finished the interview by saying: “It’s time to start winning games. Last season we finished really, really strong so we need to try to play as we did in the last 10 games of last season. This is the way we need to be and playing our best football.”
