Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals patient approach with Edinson Cavani

Edinson Cavani’s omission from the Manchester United match-day squad to travel to PSG raised a few eyebrows on Monday afternoon, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed his patient approach to not throw the 33-year-old straight into the mixer.

The Uruguayan joined up with the squad for the first time on Monday, after a two-week quarantine upon arriving in England. Cavani was a free-agent over summer, and therefore not part of an athlete bubble.

His last competitive start came back in March, with the 19/20 Ligue 1 season being scrapped prematurely. To hep build match fitness, Solskjaer is looking to initially utilise the veteran pragmatically.

The manager told the club’s official website: “He’s naturally fit. He is fit enough but he needs to play football with the rest of the players and be in those kinds of situations. Of course, you can’t live on memory, really, because it’a been a while.”

Although Cavani didn’t make the squad for a return to Paris, the forward will be expected to be involved at the weekend against Chelsea. His time will certainly come, but the club want to ensure that he is 100% ready.

Solskjaer continued by saying: “He’s very thorough, professional and he knows what he needs and what he wants. He still hasn’t ticked all the boxes before he’s available to play.”
